"Cluaran"

Cluaran is my second Highland Cattle Sporran created for Peter at Running River Ranch, made from the fur of the beautiful cattle he raises.

Unlike my first attempt at sporran making, I did a bit of talking and learning from other Sporran makers, learned some proper stitching, and made it a bit bigger.

It's also been dyed black for use as a dress Sporran.

Because I couldn't resist a blank piece of leather while it was drying after I formed it, I tooled a stylized Thistle, and it is after that which it is named.

The chain fasteners are removable, so it can be worn attached to a belt, or chain.

Hand cut, dyed, formed, tooled and stitched... you know the drill. ;) Finished with a waterproof seal.

Tir Na NOg

So here is the piece that has been responsible for eating up my entire past month.

I've never made a Sporran before, and it didn't take too long to realize any existing patterns I could find appeared horribly plain if not extremely primitive to me. So, I made up my mind to just wing it.

For my first Sporran, I don't think it turned out too bad. There are of course a few flaws and things that I've learned now and will only make the next that much better. Trial and error as they say.

As always, this is completely hand cut, tooled, and carved leather. Also, because of the lack of a machine, entirely hand stitched.

The fur is the inspiration for me to begin making these. As I mentioned a few posts back, I recently met a fantastic Highland Cattle rancher who for the most part raises these beautiful animals purely for their meat. He was at a loss for what to do with the beautiful fur, especially considering how expensive it is to have them tanned (and after having attempted tanning some myself now, I can understand why!)

But what he did mention, and after much researching on my part realized, there is absolutely no one out there making and selling Sporrans with Highland Cattle fur, despite that there is a demand for them. Well, we are rectifying this situation.

This particular sporran will be purchasable this weekend at the Tallahassee Highland Games and Celtic Festival, at the Running River Ranch booth, where Peter will be holding a raffle for it, as well as showing his lovely cattle and selling various cuts of meats as he usually is. :)

UrRu & Other Adventures

So, I walked into the world of The Dark Crystal, and I came back out again with this.

I've taken up archery again, and needed a quiver. Of course any old store bought quiver was not going to do, so I challenged myself to make my own dream quiver.

For whatever reason, my old childhood favorite The Dark Crystal wouldnt leave my mind. Funny thing is there isn't even a single archer in the entire film... but if there were, this is definitely what a Gelfling would use. ;-)

Took me about a week in all... with a few mad sessions of Mass Effect 2 thrown into the mix. I really enjoyed making this, and really feel like a lot of "myself" is shining back out from it.

I named it "UrRu", after the mystics from the film.

This was also good practice for my upcoming massive project of many many sporrans. I recently met a Highland cattle rancher, and I will be using his hides to make sporrans using said beautiful Highland fur as embellishment.

I also bought from him a few un-tanned hides for very cheap, and plan to tan them myself with the help of an incredible hunter/tanner/bowyer/fletcher I met at the archery shop. I'd like to see if it would be worth my while to tan the hides myself, or just continue to buy them already finished. If nothing else, it will be a great experience to learn the process of tanning and actually do it myself.

Harlequin Romance

Hand painted in acrylics and sealed with a waterproof sheen.

I heavily textured these when tooling to mimic a paper mache look to them, and added gold "aging" around the edges and eyes.

They are meant to be sold as a pair, the "female" with an embellishment of dainty white feathers.

She reminded me of the Sea, so I named her after a sea goddess.

Richly colored in pale blues, sea greens, and a light wash of purple. All finished with layer of translucent shimmering silver, that might make one think of sea foam.

Masks Masks & More Masks

I've been hard at work creating masks, building an inventory so I can eventually start showing them. Although this hasnt stopped me from selling a few in between.

My goal is to keep an inventory of 30-40 masks on hand.... and just sell and create, rince and repeat... while keeping a solid inventory. Would like to start doing art shows and geeky conventions. Maybe even DragonCon next year? We'll see. :)

Gawd its been over a year? Time flies....

I spent most of last year as the Art Director for a very nice magazine, good steady money, but it apparently sucked every ounce of creativity out of me. I stopped working for them in February.... and have been having one hell of a time trying to get myself back together. Slowly my muse is coming back....

I've decided to try my hand at mask making. I've ordered the materials I will need to create some leather masks. I'll see how I do with this, and maybe evolve on to neoprene or plastic molded masks.... I'll see. The latter definitely seems much more complicated, thus why I am starting with leather.

I will post my progress.

Bought an absolutely beautiful hand made leather bound sketchbook at Megacon this weekend. A bit small for my taste but I just couldnt resist its rustic medeival almost steam-punk look..

The skull was drawn using missmonsters steampunk skull as reference.. such an inspiring piece of art to me.Got some new colored brush pens yesterday.... decided to play with them.... color is such a struggle for me.

Trying to force myself to sketch every night now.

Another attempt in Painter...

....well Painter Essentials to be precise... got it for free with my Wacom... and I am currently too poor to buy the full program. But from what I understand the only difference is fewer brushes, an no brush customization... which is fine by me, baby steps. I don't need too much info all at once!

This one was inspired by a challenge on Gnomon Workshop.... "Personal Transport". Lots of people submitted robots and such... but I'm more of an organic kinda girl. And I love me some snails.

Not quite happy with it... particularly the background... but then that is something I've always struggled with, even with traditional mediums. I am really fighting to get the brushes to behave naturally.... but I guess it all just takes practice... and figuring out which works best for my style.

Oh.... also finally bought a mac. =) I am now officially part of the Mac cult.... keeping my good ol Frankenstein PC for my gaming tho... built her myself.... she's 7 years old now and I keep up on her so she is always pretty cutting edge for gaming machine. =)

Hushpaw

I have finally purchased a Wacom tablet... after having wanted one for literally 10 years.

I figure I'm not getting any younger... and I've gone from being very talented for my age... to severely falling behind in technology and skill.

So, this is my first WIP done entirely in Painter. Really digging this program.

She is an homage to my old character from Everquest. Lots of good memories and friends still kept from that game... and Hushpaw was there with me through pretty much all of it. :)

Fae Noggins

Hi everyone!

So sorry I havent been keeping you up to date on my faerie heads!!

I've decided on a name for them... they will be called "Fae Noggins". :D

So far I've got about a dozen done... I'm a bit behind... but I think I've got a bit of a rythm down now so things should start picking up :)

I've been enjoying making these soooo much. I don't have to worry about whether or not they would sell or anything like that... and they can just become whatever, and I can get as out there and nutty as I want. ;)

Steampunk

This little spidey isn't my work, but I totally want to make one.

I discovered today an entire genre that up until now, I was completely oblivious of. And I must say, I am completely enamored.

A mix of Victorian steampowered gadgets, cog-critters, and a touch of Harry Potterness. I love it.

Up until now I've been at a complete loss of how to decorate our guest bedroom... I definitely wanted to go the route of old world.. perhaps French or English Victorian... but it seemed so cold and, well... not me. But give it a bit of a steampunk twist... some shelves with some little odds and ends... mysterious aged transcripts framed on the wall... and well.. that is something.

I am inspired. And when that happens, WATCH OUT!

Wedding Favors

Hello everyone!

I am sure you think I've fallen off the planet! ;)

I've been busy planning our wedding for December! It is quite a distraction!

After spending some time trying to decide what would make decent wedding favors... I decided I am going to sculpt all my guests little faerie heads! To hang wherever. =)

It will be a daunting task... but I think I can do it, as long as I make them as the RSVP's come in.... and get a little head start (they havent been sent out yet!)

So.. tonight I made my first one. =) He isnt quite finished... need to finish gluing his hair on... as you can probably see he isnt dry yet. ;)

Not sure what to name him. He's a little old goat kinda guy... a satyr or what-have-you. =)

WIP: Maeve

Here is the latest.... she is my largest sculpt yet, standing at 26 inches. Such a large scale is proving to be quite a challenge as just about every bit of her has needed its own armature... even her ears!

She is the sculpt I plan on placing in the alcove in our foyer... to watch over guests as they come in... and point them in the direction of the fun. :)

WIP: Mina

Its been a couple weeks now since I've finished a new sculpt.. and this one is the culprit. Started her when I finished Farley.. She's my first suspended sculpt.. its difficult!!!! I had another Grover moment and got so frustrated and unhappy with her I just tossed her in the oven as is to just finally finish her. And again I am more pleased with her than I thought I would be! :)

So here she is so far... I hope to have her finished tomorrow.

When she is finished I plan on hanging her by the front door looking out the window.. to greet visitors. ;)

Two sketches

Here are a pair of sketches from the past few days ....

I had an idea for a sort of satyr... but man and deer instead of man and goat.... might make a complete illustration of him eventually... a sort of green man... maybe even a sculpture... who knows.

This one though... she will be making her home in an alcove in the foyer of our home. I've already started her armeture, and although she will be sitting upon rocks.. standing, she is 26" tall. She is on hold for now though, as I've run out of clay!! Her name will be Maeve.

Well this one is finished. I timed how long this one took me to make... just about 10 hours. :) I will post her on ebay probably tomorrow... figuring she is a days work... to get a better idea how much of an income I would have if I wanted to do this on a full time basis. :) Teehee.

Her hair still needs a bit of taming... and she will probably have her photoshoot tomorrow.

Stray Sod

Always a fan of Brian Froud... and having admired the book Faeries all through my childhood... I think its natural that it wouldnt take long for me to break down and bring to life one of his wonderful drawings.

As I was working on this one.. I wasnt happy with it through the entire process. I didnt take a single WIP photo because I was sure I was going to give up and smoosh him at any second... the head kept flattening out and becoming wide (UGGGH sculpting small scale with prosculpt can drive one INSANE!).. he wouldnt smooth.. his butt kept getting too heavy causing him to topple over... so many little things that last night I got fed up and threw him in the oven regardless of the fact that he was nowhere near being smoothed and finished (sshhh! He doesnt even have thumbs!) I made up my mind today after having baked him that I would paint him and finish him tonight to get him out of the way so I could start on something new.

As I worked everything started to come together. He already knew what he wanted.. and he wanted imperfection damnit! My dirty little bumpy stray sod!

In the end he turned out WAAAY better than I thought he was going to. And I am quite pleased with him!

I am having so much fun with her. She has definitely taught me many things... the biggest lesson being to not fight my own imagination. It is so easy to be infuenced by all the incredible artists around you.. and to want to emulate what they are doing. But Gwyllion wasnt gonna have it!

Things should start to slow down from here out though... tomorrow I will give her hair... and from there is foreign territory.... clothing her!! The clothing part was where I got stumped on my last soft bodied sculpt, Basil, and he still sits naked on my shelf!

I still need to create her spear... the one she is holding is temporary as it belongs to a different figurine of mine... I'm thinking of just using a simple little stick with maybe some tiny beads and feathers hanging from it.

WIP:3 The Huntress

I've been working on her some more for the past few nights.. and I've decided to take the advice to cover her with a piece of damp paper towel to keep her smaller bits from burning... so I've been able to freely continue sculpting her. I am almost finished now, save that I havent been happy with her left hand, and will be resculpting it, along with a spear which she will be holding.

WIP:2 The Huntress

ok... got a chance to work on her some more tonight... and omg for about 3 hours her head looked JUST like Patric Stewart.. very frustrating! Somehow I managed to give her face a more feminine look.. but it was a fight!

Its amazing how differently you see your sculpts when you look at them as photos.. I can see so many more flaws now that I am looking at the pictures! I need to finish her feet.. fix her cankles... and smooth her out... I'm probably going to add her ears and hands after I've given this chunk of her a bit of a baking..

I am also going to sculpt onto her some dreadlocks... =) Hopefully she will start to look more feminine once she has some nice long hair.

WIP:1 The Huntress

So I decided to put Basil back on the back-burner. Clothing him is driving me nuts.. and I'm afraid if I carry on fighting with him I'll burn out and loose the drive to sculpt.... particularly since he is only my second.

So I've decided to do a smaller scale.. all hard bodied sculpt... I'm not clothing this one! And any clothes she will be wearing I will be sculpting on!

Here is what I've got for starters.... really wishing I had an artists anatomy book or some sort of reference... just working from what is in my head. But its proving difficult to lay her muscles and skin folds out right.

My plan for her is that she is not going to be a faerie.. rather.. a brownie of sorts. She will be holding a bow or spear in her left hand.

WIP:2 Basil

For the past couple of nights I've been working, or at least trying to work... on Basil's clothing. It is proving to be a HUGE challenge for me, and I wonder if his clothing will actually stay on once I've finished him.. or if it will all gradually fall off. I doubt that I will sell Basil... as he isnt really of quality that I would want people buying from me. Perhaps he might end up as a gift to someone one day.

But for now, he is a lesson learned that I should not do soft bodied sculptures... no matter how cool I think Jill Willich's pieces are.

WIP:1 Venezia

My current piece is this, what will eventually be an inked and watercolored (mayhaps some color pencil) illustration of a random place in Venice (using as a reference a photo I took during a visit years ago). I plan on giving this piece to my fiance Dave's mother for Christmas this year.

There is a bit of a story behind my reasons for doing a piece on Venice. Apparently, Dave's dad did a watercolor for friends of theirs years ago, and his mom requested one for herself... unfortunately he passed away before he was able to make it for her. =( So hopefully it wont be considered inappropriate for me to do this for her... but I've heard her mention it more than once.. and Dave thinks it is a good idea. All one can do is hope she agrees. =)

A Critique from Trollsmyth....

I am insanely flattered at the moment. I had made up my mind to set up some links to this blog of other blogs I found inspiring. Artists mostly... save one which is Trollsmyth (cool name eh?). I placed him as a link simply because its not just other people's art that inspires me... but the wonderous worlds that spring from RPG games. People who know me know I am a total MMO dork... and that prior to that I even did some geeking out to pen and paper D&D. They always spawned some of my most inspired doodles. Trollsmyth seemed to me a blogger very on top of the RPG industry.. something admitedly I wouldnt have a clue where to start outside of the small circle of MMO's I am involved in now.

So where am I going with this?? Well if you take a gander at his most current post he has done perhaps the most thorough critique of my art and myself as an artist I've had in my entire life. And I have to admit, he mentions things about my style I had never even noticed before.. for instance the fact that I work from the bottom up. I pondered my most current illustration (I'll post a WIP tonight)... and realized that indeed, the bottom is almost complete... the top, hardly touched.

Thanks Trollsmyth. =) It means alot to receive such a wonderful crit from someone who so closely follows and world and genre that is created and imagined by artists and dreamers that are leagues ahead of me in skill. You could have posted a scathing crit if you'd wanted! ;-)

First off.. let me point out Bailey.. our cat... being a complete supermodel.

We've been on a painting rampage pretty much non-stop for the last week or so in the new house. I'd planned on simply sponging two accent walls in the master bedroom, but about halfway through the first wall, I decided I didnt want to cover the entire second wall.. it would be too dark... but how could I only cover part, without it looking rediculous? It wasnt much longer before I was struck with inspiration. Trying to describe my idea to Dave felt like I was speaking alien.. so I resorted to cave-man communication and busted out the sketchbook. ;-) Within the next two hours the wall was complete... from just a simple brain-fart.
